Software Updates for Nav One 4000 / 4100 / 4500

From this page you can download software updates for your NAV ONE 4000 / 4100 / 4500.  The updates are for correcting software bugs and/or to enhance the operation of your unit. See the descriptions below for specific information.

The updates on this page are for the NAV ONE 4000/4100/4500 models only. Updates for other models can be found elsewhere on this site.

How to check the software version in your unit

  1. Press the "snake logo" button to get to the main menu.
  2. Press SETTINGS.
  3. Press SYSTEM INFO.
  4. The very first line is the software version.  The version number starts with the letter 'V'.
  5. Now check the available software versions at the bottom of this page and see if there is a newer version.  If there are several newer versions, you only need to install the newest version.  It will have all the  previous updates.

NOTES

To update software, your NAV ONE must be powered-up at the computer.  If you have a laptop computer, then the update can be applied in your car, using the cigarette cord to power the NAV ONE.  If you do not have a laptop, then you will need a power supply to power the NAV ONE at the computer.  Cobra AC adapter MNA-120-AC is recommended.  To order one, please click <here>.

You will also need a mini-USB cable to connect the NAV ONE to a computer.  This mini-USB cable will have a regular "Type A" connector on one end for connecting to a PC and a "Mini Type B" connector on the other end for connecting to the unit.  This cable is commonly used with newer digital cameras and can be obtained from local retailers.  When buying a mini-USB cable, bring your NAV ONE to the store to ensure you get a cable that fits properly.  The mini-USB port is located on the back of the NAV ONE, right next to the power connector.

DO NOT connect the USB cable until instructed to do so.

STEP 1:  USB DEVICE DRIVER

NOTE:  Only a 32-bit driver is available.  If your operating system is 64-bit, then you must update your unit from a different computer.

To begin, you will need to install a USB Device Driver, which provides for proper communication between the NAV ONE and the PC.  This device driver is used for all software updates.  The driver only needs to be installed once.  Here is how to perform the installation:

  1. Download and run this self-extracting executable: N1USBDD.exe, which will place the USB device driver into a folder named c:\4000updt.
  2. Connect the NAV ONE to a USB port on the PC using the mini-USB cable. DO NOT yet connect the power cable.
  3. Now connect the power cable to the NAV ONE but do not turn it on.  The NAV ONE should beep, which indicates that a connection has been established.
  4. The PC should recognize a new USB device and a window should pop up.
  5. For Windows Vista users, please follow the automated steps to install the driver.  If the driver is not found, you will need to manually locate the driver.  The driver is located on Drive C: in the following folder:  4000updt.
  6. For windows 2000 and XP users, install the driver with the "Found New Hardware" wizard as follows:
    1. If Windows asks to connect to Windows Update to search for software, choose No and click on Next.
    2. Choose Install from a list or specific location and click on Next.
    3. Click on Search for the best driver in these locations
    4. Check the box that says Include this location in the search
    5. Click on Browse
    6. Click on My Computer
    7. Click on Local Disk C:
    8. Click on the folder4000updt, then click on OK
    9. Click on Next
  7. After the driver is done installing, click on Finish
  8. The driver is now installed.  Disconnect the USB cable from the NAV ONE.

STEP 2:  SOFTWARE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Here is how to apply a software update (after the device driver has been installed):

  1. Select the desired update from the list below and download the file to your desktop.  You only need to install the latest version.  The latest version includes all previous updates.
  2. Double-click on the file, then choose Unzip. This will place the software update into a folder named c:\4000updt. After the files are extracted, click OK and then click on Close.
  3. Connect the NAV ONE to a USB port on the PC using the mini-USB cable.  DO NOT yet connect the power cable.
  4. Now connect the power cable to the NAV ONE but do not turn it on.  The NAV ONE should beep, which indicates that a connection has been established.
  5. Navigate to the folder 4000updt on Drive C:
  6. Double-click on the file NavOneUpdate.exe. This will start the update program. The status bar at the bottom of the dialog window should turn green and display Nav One Connected.
  7. Once connected, click on the button Transfer Software and Data Files.
  8. After the update completes and the message Nav One was successfully Updated appears, click on OK and then click on Exit.
  9. Remove the USB cable.  You have successfully updated your unit.

Version 2.0.91R, Released August 23, 2006

The NAV ONE 4000 / 4500 Version 2 update consists of 2 parts – a Software Update, and a Database Patch.   Most of the enhancements are in the Software Update.  The Database Patch is not required, but will enable some other fixes/enhancements.  Those items that require the database patch are noted in the “Detail Changes” below.

The database patch is too large to download so contact Cobra customer support if you are interested.   The database patch is available on DVD.  To repeat, the Software update can be downloaded and used without the database patch.

To check whether your unit already has the database patch:

  1. Press the "snake logo" button to get to the main menu.
  2. Press SETTINGS.
  3. Press SYSTEM INFO.
  4. A couple lines up from the bottom is the database version.  The line starts "T-NA-Q".  Check the number after the letter Q.  If it says 36.00 then you already have the database patch.  If your unit has an older database then it can be updated.

Summary changes are shown below.  For a list of detail changes, click here.

  • New higher-quality vector-based 3D map display option, with multiple sky backgrounds based on time of day.
  • Speed and Red Light Camera location detection capability added.  As part of Cobra's ongoing business of Speed Detection, being #1 in radar detectors, Cobra is building a database of Speed and Red Light camera locations which will be available this fall from the Cobra web site.
  • Announcement of “side of street” when you arrive at destination
  • New night display map colors with automatic changeover at approximately sunrise/sunset
  • Improved traffic presentation:  4 colors instead of 2, showing more detailed traffic data; traffic colors now offset from the road to better see at a glance which side is impacted (requires database patch); additional traffic pop-up warning functionality and graphics, and "Avoid Heavy Traffic" button now available in Detour screen
  • Additional routing option added to "prefer main roads", primarily used with Shortest routing
  • If you have a switched cigarette power outlet, the unit will now optionally automatically come on when the car is started
  • Additional flexibility in finding street addresses.  More forgiving if an exact match is not found, and new options are presented
  • Several hundred ease-of-use and functionality enhancements based on consumer testing and feedback
